Scotch Whiskly in a 12oz Can

scotch-whisky-in-a-can

That’s right folks, you can now get your warm hit of scotch in a classy yet convenient can. Just like the random find of 100-year old scotch in Antarctica, this is impressively cool. The Panama-based liquor company called Scottish Spirits is now canning roughly 8 shots into a can. Unfortunately, it’s only available in South America the Caribbean unless of course you smuggle some back. In that case, please bring me some too!

World Food News – Conveyorbelt Sushi, Dumpling Factory Tour, World’s Best Spa Cuisine, Best Hotel Restaurants in the World, and More!

world-food-news

[Global Food News is a weekly selection of world food news deemed important, absurd, strange, or otherwise hilarious at Food Trotter!]

Conveyor belt sushi restaurants are probably one of the best things to come out of Japan. So why aren’t they here yet!? After reading that article by the NYT, I suddenly have an urge for fast and cheap sushi. They certainly don’t run sushi joints like clockwork here! Heck, with constant shouting, yelling, and poor service, I think I’d rather hear the comforting buzz from the sushi conveyor belt. But hey, the trend of Japanese Izakaya’s is here, so those other Japanese restaurants might have to switch over to something else. What do you think?

For Sushi Chain, Conveyor Belts Carry Profit – Ever heard of conveyor belt sushi restaurants? They’re prevalent everywhere in Asia, though nowhere to be found in North America. It’s such an awesome concept: sit down, eat whatever you want along the revolving conveyor belt, and pay according to the number of plates you eat. Someone please open one here, it really isn’t a new concept! [NYT]

Explorer’s century-old scotch returns from Antarctica – Everyone’s finding old bottles of wine or whisky these days. So to add to the discovery, several bottles of whisky were uncovered under a shack in Antarctica that was used during the Nimrod expedition in 1907. Deemed so priceless, these bottles of Mackinlays scotch were flown by private jet back to Scotland.

Seriously Asian: Going on a Dumpling Factory Tour – Making dumplings at home is hard, but how does it work at a dumpling factory?! This is such a cool slideshow where staff from Serious Eats had a chance to go on a dumpling factory tour! [Serious Eats]

Forget a desk job – Young foodies are putting their heads together to get out of the rat race by starting their own food businesses! Looking for inspiration? Here are some stories on how 20-somethings like me were able to start their own food-based companies. Lead on fellas! [Boston.com]

The Best Hotel Restaurants in the World – Let’s face it, most hotels aren’t known for offering great culinary experiences. But here’s proof that some hotels are capable of delivering an awesome dish with your nightly stay via Conde Nast Traveler’s 2011 Gold List. Though expect to pay handsomely at these culinary palaces. [Epicurious]

World’s Best Spa Cuisine – Spas are known for monumental pampering, personal indulgence, and relaxation. Food also plays a huge role in your spa experience, though probably the least emphasized. So here’s a slideshow of the best spa cuisines in the world. [thedailymeal]

Food Not Bombs! A Taste of North Korean Cuisine Outside the DMZ

Ever wanted to cross the demilitarized zone (DMZ) to savor real North Korean food without the chance of being killed or held captive as a political toy? As a real foodie, do YOU take risks in eating things that may be hazardous to your health? What if the risks involve indefinite incapacitation like a bullet to the head? Though its unlikely you can cross to DMZ for a quick bite, you can now try North Korean cuisine at various North Korean restaurant chains found around the world in China, Nepal, Thailand, and Dubai. With best-known exports like conventional weapons of mass destruction, noodles and kimchi are now the next best thing.

Known as the Okryu-Gwan restaurant chain, an all-female staff serve Pyongyang cuisine to foreigners in colorful gowns and half-decent English. NPR’s Peter Kenyon describes his experience as a synthesized on-stage karaoke and an extensive menu list. Personally, I’ve always had a fascination with North Korea. Maybe its the belligerent behavior towards the West or the curious lifestyle of  “Dear Leader” Kim Jong-il. For now, I’ll err on the side of caution by avoiding a trip to North Korea and try my chances at an Okryu-Gwan restaurant chain. Most importantly, has anyone been to this North Korean restaurant in Dubai or elsewhere?!??! Let us know and I’ll personally write you a thank you letter addressed as Dear Leader!

World Food News – Stay at an Indian Coffee Plantation, Nikkei: Peruvian-Japanese Cuisine, The Scent Musem in NYC, and Much More!

international-food-news

[International Food News is a weekly selection of food news deemed important, absurd, strange, or otherwise hilarious at Food Trotter!]

If you haven’t eaten in these cities yet, you should – Lima, Chicago, Copenhagen, London and Singapore top the list. But Lima, the South American city in Peru is absolutely unique where Nikkei, a cuisine that blends Peruvian and Japanese flavours is just waiting to explode. [Globe and Mail]

Restaurant Guidebook Links to Online Content for Fresh Reviews – This may be too soon considering expensive costs for data roaming, but Italian 2Spaghi.it brings the online and offline worlds together by publishing a physical directory of restaurants that links to online reviews. Scan the QR code in your guidebook with a smart phone, and voila, you have updated online data about the restaurant. [Springwise]

Coffee Plantations in India Blend History and Hospitality – Coffee planters in India now provide tourists with a place to stay on their coffee estates to earn extra income! Imagine the smell in the air when you take your morning breath outside your cabin: earthy, bold, a deep with flavour… what an experience. [NYT]

What’s that smell? New York museum calls it art – Scent, that valuable sensation that adds to our eating experience , now has a dedicated exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. Experience what it’s like as a “scent critic” by visiting “The Art of Scent, 1889-2001” this November. [USA Today]

5 Places to Catch Yourself a Sustainable Fish – Sustainable farming and eating practices are officially in, now what about sustainable seafood? Here are five places to go fishing sustainably and catch your own seafood using eco-friendly ways like pole-fishing or hand-harvesting. [The Daily Meal]

10 Things to do with Kimchi – I love kimchi, especially in fried rice, a hot stone bowl soup, a hot dog, or even as an individual side. The only downside is the stinky flatulence you get after eating kimchi (maybe I’m the only one?). [Serious Eats]

Cool Food Products You Should Try from a Porn Star and Son of Raggae Legend Bob Marley

We ran into two interesting products that feature the iconic porn star Ron Jeremy and the son of reggae legend Bob Marley. Both seem very promising, though it’s up to the consumer to decide!

Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

Rohan Marley, one of Bob Marley’s many many children, has been in the coffee business for many years. But it’s taken countless bureaucratic hurdles for him to establish 100 percent Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, a prized and costly “Marley” coffee that’s actually authentic. The Blue Mountain roast is considered to have a “light roast, floral, chocolatey and earthy, with bright acidity.” Here’s to a cocktail you can accompany with your next smoke!

Marley Coffee Jamaica Blue Mountain is $39.95 (12 ounces whole bean) at marleycoffee.com.

Ron Jeremy Rum

Known for his ginormous and gifted private parts, the name Ron Jeremy can now be known for things other than a famed orgasm. Now you too can have an orgasm in your mouth by enjoying his very own brand of rum produced by the company One Eyed Spirits. Apparently it “tastes perfect naked, with nothing added” and is billed as “the adult rum.” I would argue that the Ron Jeremy brand name is probably better used for sex-related products, but hey, maybe his glass of rum will help you get lucky tonight.

Robot Waiters in China

china-robot-restaurant

A restaurant in China is replacing waiters with robots as a move to attract new customers to their Dalu Robot Restaurant. In fact, it’s probably a great way to marginalize the 1.3 billion workers or so in China and put some out of work. An amazing quotation:

“They have a better service attitude than humans,” who can be “temperamental or impatient, but they don’t feel tired, they just keep working and moving round and round the restaurant all night.”

I think it’s pretty neat, we’ll soon have a fully functioning bar operated by robots, much like in the Star War movies. You can stare and make fun of them without any repercussions. Here’s to the future of restaurants!
