A Guide to Oriental Spices

There are many different exciting spices in Oriental cuisine. Oriental spices are different, bold, and of course very delicious. Here are some popular Oriental spices you should know about (and recipes for making them).

Oriental spice 1

  • 1 teaspoon cardamom
  • 2 tsp white pepper
  • 8 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 4 teaspoons cloves
  • Mix all spices (everything should be ground) and store in a jar. Suitable to have in most pots, with meat and chicken.

Oriental spice recipe – Falafel spice

  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon seven spices
  • Mix everything and store it in a jar.

Zaatar oriental spice recipe

  • 4 tablespoons dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons sumac
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp roasted sesame seeds
  • Mortise all spices properly until it becomes a finely ground spice. Then add toasted sesame seeds and store in a jar. Mix with olive oil until you get a pulp-like mass. Have it on the pizza dough and bake in the oven.

Sumak spice recipe

Sumak is made from small red-purple berries which are dried and then ground to powder. The taste is sour and fresh. It is used extensively in salads and is served with kebab meat. It is difficult to replace it with something else but if you do not find sumak in the stores and should follow a recipe with it, you can instead take grated lemon zest and some lemon juice.

  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tbsp paprika powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Mix all ingredients and store in a jar.
